Potluck Dinners

April 25, 2006 / by Bookworm

I went to a potluck dinner the other night and someone said the Governor here in Wisconsin had signed legislation that potluck dinners were legal. I never knew there was any question against having them wasn't legal. I wonder how that question even came up? Makes you wonder who came up with trying to stop them and if the liberals are at it again?

There are a lot of very odd laws on the books from yesteryear--most by right wingers, puritans and conservatives[LOL]

Yes, I guess it was something to do with an old law and whether the food was safe to eat without being inspected or something. Rather odd?

I am not sure that I know what a pot luck dinner is, haven't heard of this in the UK, but if it's a meal in which you have no say as to the menu you choose and you take what comes, within reason, I guess that would be recognisable as pot luck.

So what is it then that might make such a meal legal or illegal? Is it a problem of risk, risk aversity, profiteering, inappropriate food handling or what? If the meal is provided at an eating house, a restuarant, would it not be governed my the hygiene rules that exist? If it is an arrangement at someone's home, then that would be a private matter would it not unless, payment constitutes a commercial contract and brings the eating into other realms of legal requirements. It would badly conflict with sociability and entrepreneurial flair.

There are so many variables and possibilities here, you could make a meal of them![ROLLEYES]

Potluck is when a group of people get together and everyone brings a something like a casserole, salad or a dessert to share with others. I guess that someone got the idea that it might not be safe because of food poisoning or some silly reason. People have been doing this for years and years. Anyway I'm glad they decided not to make it illegal.

Ah - yes that sort of sociability eating I have come across but I don't know the term used here for that. BYO is bring your own bottle and some unlicensed restaurants might advertise that as a feature for people eating at their outlet who might wish for wine with the meal.

I think it would be a sad day if people were unable to share in the arrangements of a meal by providing some of it. Another similar idea is to go between friends' homes for each course. I have yet to be invited to do that. Anyone I know interested in that kind of thing lives many, miles apart therefore, the pot luck dinner would work well in that set of circumstances.[SMILE]

Apperantly you need the luck to legalize the pot

It's the result of an attorney trying to leave his mark. Maybe at some point it made sense, but not anymore. There are hundreds and hundreds of these out-of-date laws; and some judges enforce them, and others ignore them until they can be changed. Some of the them are downright stupid.[BLUSH][THUMBDOWN]
