The Tender Bar

March 6, 2006 / by Bookworm

The Tender Bar, which is a memoir by J.R. Moehringer was just a very

interesting and entertaining read. It is the story of the author's

boyhood and coming of age in a bar. He grows up living with his mother

without his father. Off and on they live with his mother's parents where

Uncle Charlie also lives and sometimes his aunt and her 6 children live

there too. It's like one big extended family.

There are so many colorful charactors in the story.

As time goes by he spends a lot of time with his Uncle Charlie while his

mother is at work. He meets his uncle's friends who all hang out at the

bar where his uncle works as a bartender. The author tells about his

years at Yale and his first love. He tells about being a copyboy at the

New York Times.

It's just a wonderful story about his life and the nights

spent at the bar and the epilogue is especially interesting when you

find out what happened to all the charactors and the bar itself.
